The Hayward and Cable area is home to some of the best cross-country skiing in North America. The American Birkebeiner Trail alone offers over 50 km of groomed trails through the Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest.
The American Birkebeiner is the largest cross-country ski marathon in North America, drawing over 10,000 participants to Hayward and Cable every February.
