Go off the beaten path and create your own adventure.
One of the best options for snowshoeing is to find any public land and head out on a backcountry adventure. No trails, no crowds - just you and the winter woods. The northwoods region offers incredible access to public land:
Bayfield County: Over 430,000 acres of public land including federal, state, and county-owned areas
Sawyer County: Approximately 331,548 acres including 115,197 acres of county forest, 134,632 acres of federal land (Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest), and 81,719 acres of state-owned land
Washburn County: Approximately 149,000 acres, primarily county forest
Tips: Bring a map or GPS, let someone know your plans, and check conditions before heading out. Fresh snow after a storm offers the best backcountry experience.
