Part of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and one of the original eight rivers protected under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968. Begins at Namekagon Dam near Cable and flows 98 miles through some of the most scenic and least-developed country in the Upper Midwest. Upper stretches are narrow and intimate — cold-water trout stream through northern forest and bog. Below Hayward, light rapids (Class 1-2) between narrow, wooded banks. The National Park Service maintains over 60 free campsites along the riverway. No fees for river access, camping, or parking.
Wisconsin's third-largest lake at 15,300 acres, east of Hayward. "Big Chip" features a maze of 200 islands with very little shoreline development — a true wilderness paddling experience. Famous for musky fishing and stunning fall color.
One of the best paddles in Northern Wisconsin. Amazing range of character — from whitewater to slow, gentle curves and pools. A stretch for every paddler, beginner to expert.
